The Name Above All Names

Ram Naam — The Name Above All Names

In all the sacred scriptures of Bharat, no name is held more supreme than RAM. The sages declare that the two-syllable name 'RA-MA' contains within it the essence of all the Vedas, all the mantras, and all the paths to liberation. To chant RAM is to touch the infinite.

Sacred Verses on the Glory of RAM Naam

1Doha — Tulsidas, Ramcharitmanas

Raam Naam Manideepa Dharu Jeeh Dehreen Dwaar. Tulasi Bheetar Baaherehu Jau Chaahasi Ujiyaar.

Meaning: Place the jewel-lamp of RAM's name at the threshold of your tongue's doorway. O Tulsidas, if you desire light both within and without, chant RAM.

2Kabir Das

Raam Naam Ko Ank Hai, Sab Saadhan Hain Soon. Ank Gaye Kachhu Haath Nahin, Ank Rahe Das Goon.

Meaning: The name RAM is the digit '1'; all other spiritual practices are zeros. Without the digit, zeros have no value — but place the digit before them and their worth multiplies tenfold.

3Rahim Das

Eku Saadhey Sab Sadhai, Sab Saadhey Sab Jaay. Rahiman Moolahi Seenchibo, Phoolai Phalai Aghaay.

Meaning: Pursue the One (RAM's name) and all is attained. Pursue everything else and all is lost. Water the root and the tree blooms and bears fruit in abundance.

4Ramcharitmanas — Tulsidas

Hari Vyaapak Sarvatra Samaana. Prem Ten Pragat Hohin Main Jaana.

Meaning: The Lord pervades all of creation equally. I have known this truth — He reveals Himself through love and devotion alone.

5Ramcharitmanas — Tulsidas

Mangal Bhavan Amangal Haari. Dravau So Dasarath Ajir Bihaari.

Meaning: He who is the abode of all auspiciousness and the destroyer of all inauspiciousness — may that Lord who played in the courtyard of Dasharatha bless us.

6Surdas

Raam So Bado Hai Kaun, Moso Kaun Chhoto. Raam So Kharo Hai Kaun, Moso Kaun Khoto.

Meaning: Who is greater than RAM? Who is smaller than me? Who is more righteous than RAM? Who is more fallen than me? Yet RAM accepts even the most fallen — such is His boundless grace.

Sacred Stories of RAM Naam's Power

The Stone That Floated

When Shree RAM commanded the Vanar Sena to build a bridge across the ocean to Lanka, the stones would not float — until Hanuman wrote 'RAM' upon each one. The moment the name of RAM touched the stone, it floated. What the laws of nature could not do, the name of RAM accomplished. This is the Mahima — the glory — of RAM Naam.

Valmiki — The Sage Born from RAM's Name

The great sage Valmiki, author of the Ramayana, was once a dacoit named Ratnakar. The sage Narada instructed him to chant 'RAM'. Unable to utter the holy name, he was told to chant 'MARA' (meaning death) — and through continuous repetition, 'MARA MARA MARA' became 'RAMA RAMA RAMA'. Such is the power of RAM's name — even chanted in reverse, it grants liberation.

Tulsidas and the Power of RAM Naam

Goswami Tulsidas, the great devotee-poet, declared that in the Kali Yuga — the age of darkness — the name of RAM is the only boat to cross the ocean of worldly existence. He wrote the Ramcharitmanas entirely as an act of devotion, so that every soul, regardless of birth or learning, could access the glory of RAM's name and be liberated.

Why RAM Naam is Supreme

1

Taraka Mantra

RAM is the Taraka Mantra — the mantra that carries the soul across the ocean of birth and death. Lord Shiva himself whispers this name into the ears of the dying at Kashi (Varanasi), granting them liberation.

2

Two Syllables, Infinite Power

The name RAM is composed of the seed syllables of three great mantras: 'RA' from the Ashtakshara mantra of Vishnu (Om Namo Narayanaya), 'A' from the Panchakshara of Shiva (Om Namah Shivaya), and 'MA' from the Panchakshara again. Thus RAM contains the essence of all divine names.

3

Accessible to All

Unlike complex rituals or lengthy practices, the name RAM requires no initiation, no special time, no sacred place. It can be chanted by anyone, anywhere, at any moment — in joy or sorrow, in health or illness. This is the supreme gift of RAM Naam to all of humanity.

4

Hanuman's Eternal Testimony

Shree Hanuman, the greatest devotee who ever lived, chose RAM's name as his sole sustenance. He carries RAM's name in his heart, on his lips, and in every cell of his being. When his chest was opened, the name RAM was found written on every rib, every bone, every drop of blood. This is the ultimate testimony to the power of RAM Naam.

Jai Raam Ramaa Ramanam Samanam. Bhav Taap Bhayaakul Paahi Janam.

Victory to RAM, the beloved of Ramaa (Sita), the one who brings peace to all. O Lord, protect those who are tormented by the fears and sorrows of worldly existence.
